- Autonomous Robot – Elevator and escalator company Schindler developed robot system that can autonomously drill holes and install anchor bolts needed to fasten guide rails which enable elevators to move up or down building
- Problems – Drilling holes and installing bolts is repetitive, physically exhausting, requires great accuracy and concentration, while having to work in noisy and dusty environment
- ABB Model – Selected ABB IRB 2600 robot with reach of 1.65 meters, payload of 29 kilograms, and can operate in tough environments
- How It Works – Robot mounted on platform and attached to hoist scans wall to determine uneven surfaces, uses algorithms and sensors to determine if holes are accurate or needed to be repositioned, before installing anchor bolts
- Benefits – Include increased accuracy, more quality installations, and improved safety and conditions for workers
- Results – Prototype successful in several installations in Europe, with Schindler receiving award of excellence at Tall+Urban Innovation Conference in April 2019, and now planning to increase its use
