Briefing

  • Mind Reader Device – MIT researchers developed wearable device, AlterEgo, that reads neuromuscular signals in face to translate thoughts into words
  • How It Works – Electrodes in device detect neuromuscular signals in jaw and face, which get fed to machine learning system trained to translate certain signals into words
  • Communication through Vibration – Has pair of bone-conduction headphones, which transmit vibration through bones of face to inner ear to communicate to user
  • AI Training – Team collected neuromuscular signals data from user conducting arithmetic task and communicating opponents’ moves in chess game, using AI to analyze and correlate signals to words
  • Testing – In usability study with 10 subjects spending 15 minutes on arithmetic applications and 90 minutes executing computations, device achieved 92% transcription accuracy
  • Potential Applications – Include serving as communication interface for AI assistants and applications, assisting people with disabilities, as well as facilitating communication in noisy environments, such as flight deck, power plant or printing press, and in special operations
