- Government Drone Program – U.S. Department of Transportation announced that 10 state and local governments will be part of a program designed to test drone applications to pave way for their integration in U.S. airspace in future
- Cities Covered – Include San Diego, California; Reno, Nevada; Bismark, North Dakota; Memphis, Tennessee; Durant, Oklahoma; Herndon, Virginia; Topeka, Kansas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Fort Myers, Florida; and Fairbanks, Alaska
- Looser Restrictions – Allows drones to fly overhead, at night, and outside of pilot’s field of vision
- Selected Applications – Include delivering defibrillators, medical device that delivers electric current to heart, in Reno, Nevada in partnership with 911, and inspecting mosquito population in Fort Myers, Florida
- Regulation Development – Data from tests will help inform development of new regulations integrating drones into U.S. airspace
