Briefing

  • Drone Traffic Management System – U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) collaborating with industry partners Amazon, Boeing, General Electric, and Google to create unmanned traffic management system (UTM) for low altitude (i.e. less than 400 feet) drone flights
  • Separate from FAA system – System will be separate from FAA’s Air Traffic Management (ATM) system, comprised of ground-based radars and human air traffic controllers, but will need to work alongside it
  • Timeline – System testing will occur in spring 2018, with system possibly completed on or before 2020
  • Corporate Funding – Funding for system will be provided by industry partners to speed up development
  • Registered Drones – Drone traffic management system needed as more than one million recreational drones and 70,000 commercial drones registered with FAA, with number expected to significantly increase in next few years
