- AR for Android – Google released preview of software development kit (SDK) for developers to create augmented reality experiences for Android phones, starting with Pixel and Samsung S8
- Competition with Apple – Competes with Apple’s ARKit, similar SDK for developing augmented reality apps for iOS
- Based on Project Tango – Builds on earlier project called Project Tango in 2014, but unlike Project Tango, ARCore can work on phones that have less advanced sensors
- 100 Million Devices – Plans to bring augmented reality to 100 million devices at end of preview, partnering with manufacturers Samsung, Huawei, LG, Asus, and others
- Augmented Reality APIs – Has motion tracking for determining position and orientation of phones, environmental understanding for horizontal surface detection, and light estimation, for matching light of virtual objects to surroundings to make them realistic
- AR-Enabled Browsers – Also releasing prototype browsers for web developers to develop augmented reality features for websites
