Photonics breakthrough is less disruptive to light than empty space

Researchers at the Columbia Engineering School have discovered a material with a zero refractive index.  This means that light can pass through the material as if the material wasn't there; light doesn't speed up or slow down.  This property was achieved by combining two materials - one with a positive refractive index and one with a negative refractive index.  The material may revolutionize fiber optics.
