Briefing

  • Suzhou Institute – Facility, called HUST-Suzhou Institute for Brainsmatics, setting up in Suzhou, China beginning in September 2017, with 5-year budget of 450 million yuan ($67 million), 120 scientists and technicians, and own high-speed brain-imaging system
  • Brain-imaging System – Will use 50 automated machines that can slice, snap high-definition pictures, and reconstruct rat brain data into 3D pictures in two weeks which would take months in typical laboratories which use one or two brain-imaging systems
  • Contribution to Neuroscience – Aims to provide large-scale standardized data generation for neuroscientists, helping researchers map neural network connectivity for Alzheimer's Disease studies and artificial intelligence projects
  • Next Steps – Plans to increase speed of machines while using multiple devices in parallel, as well as collaborate with Allen Institute and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
