January 18, 2017

Briefing

  • Flood prone North U.S. – More than one dozen years of satellite data from NASA show ground water has increased in Northern parts of U.S., placing these areas at higher risk of flooding
  • Less flood risk in South – Trend is reverse for rest of country with ground water decreasing in West, South and Southwest regions due to prolonged droughts, putting South at less risk of floods
  • Climate change and rainfall patterns – Rainfall is more frequent in Midwest and Plain states for past half century, with scientists believing that climate change is redistributing which areas get more rainfall than others
