  • Legally-binding agreement – More than 170 countries reached legally-binding agreement to cut use of chemical coolants used in airconditioners and refrigerators called hydrofluorocarbons or HFCs in favor of environment-friendly alternatives
  • Significant impact – Can reduce rise in atmospheric temperatures by nearly one degree Farenheit, which can have greater impact than Paris Agreement, and can eliminate equivalent of 70 billion tons of carbon dioxide from atmosphere, twice the carbon pollution emitted globally each year
  • Timeline – Wealthy countries committed to stop production and consumption of HFCs by 2018, while much of rest of the world such as China, Brazil, and Africa decided to do so by 2024, and some of hottest countries agreed on later schedule of 2028
