Proof Point Findings
- Payloads – Satellite, space probe, on-orbit vehicle or platform that carries humans, animals or cargo during orbital launch, often separated from launch vehicle to continue spaceflight independently
- Total Worldwide Payloads – Recorded 185 launches in 2016, with 79 (43%) from commercial sector, 67 (36%) from civil, 20 (11%) from non-profit and 19 (10%) from military
- U.S. Dominated – Made and launched almost half of payloads at 91, with 72 (79%) for commercial purposes
- Key Growth Drivers – Include rapidly advancing space technology, accelerating space and geological research, expansion of space commercial applications (e.g. big data, network connectivity, and weather services), and increasing government support for space exploration
