- OCSD Space Testing – OCSD launced two small satellites, called CubeSats, to test new laser-based, space-to-ground communication system and new way for satellites to work together while in orbit
- CubeSats – Miniature satellite commonly used in low Earth orbit for remote sensing or communications
- Technological Advances – Unlike previous satellites, lasers on two CubeSats used are hard-mounted to body of spacecraft, changing satellite’s orientation to point laser in given direction, thus making laser system more compact than anything previously deployed in space
- Expected Outcome – New satellites will test out new version of astrological navigation, increasing accuracy to 0.05 degrees, as well as test new system for detecting their proximity to other satellites
