Proof Point
Waymo self-driving cars achieved new milestone on July 2018, having driven total of eight million miles on public roads in U.S. since testing began in 2009
Cumulative Miles Driven by Waymo Self-Driving Cars on Public Roads
June 2015 – July 2018 (millions)
Proof Point Findings
- Self-Driving Car – Vehicle capable of sensing environment and navigating without human intervention
- 8 Million Cumulative Miles – As of July 2018, Waymo’s self-driving cars had driven eight million miles on public roads in U.S. since testing started in 2009, doubling four million miles achieved in November 2017
- Accelerating Pace – Took only eight months to accumulate second four million miles, compared to eight years to achieve first four million
- 25,000 Miles Daily – Waymo’s autonomous vehicles, which are Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans numbering 600, are now driving at 25,000 miles per day on average
- Virtual Simulation – Waymo driverless cars also driving in virtual simulation using artificial intelligence, achieving more than five billion virtual miles since 2009, equivalent to 25,000 virtual cars driving all day everyday
- Key Growth Drivers – Include intensifying competition in autonomous vehicles (AV) market, rapidly improving AV technologies, including artificial intelligence and sensors, and more accommodating government policies for testing technology on public roads
