Today’s thread: AI spending is getting a second look, and the money that stays will need to show its work.
For 2027 planning, fund the AI uses you can measure, and be ready to show the return when someone asks.

Apple Trims Engineers’ Daily AI Budgets and Goldman Pulls Coding Agents From Bankers as the Heaviest Spenders Level Off (November 2–4, 2026)
Bloomberg reports Apple cut some engineers’ daily AI cap from $300 to $200 last month and is weighing $100, with some non-engineering teams possibly dropping from $100 to $25; sources said few staff used their full allowance. Goldman Sachs has limited Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to its roughly 12,000 engineers after a productivity and risk review, cutting off traders and bankers. Ramp data show the top 1% of AI spenders spent 3.1% less per employee in September than at July’s peak, even as 55.9% of businesses now pay for AI. Ramp’s economist attributes much of the dip to falling model prices.
So what
The first budget correction is about who gets AI and for what, not whether to use it. Before your 2027 plan locks, set AI budgets by role and use case, each with a named owner and a quarterly usage-to-outcome review. Pull the last 90 days of spend by team and find where allowances go unused, as Apple apparently did. Cut there first, rather than across the board, so the teams producing results keep their tools.
Confidence: Established fact — Apple and Goldman details are Bloomberg reporting carried by multiple outlets; Ramp figures come from its published AI Index.

Voters Backed Data Center Limits in 40 of 41 Local Ballot Measures (November 3, 2026)
Ballotpedia’s tally of Tuesday’s local measures shows 27 restrictions passed and 13 pro-development measures failed, with Harwood, North Dakota, the only development-favoring result. In NBC’s exit poll, 56% of voters called data centers a crucial or major factor in their vote for Congress. Goldman Sachs reportedly sees 45% of planned U.S. data center capacity at risk of temporary freezes. The Deep View notes OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly seeking smaller 20 to 30 megawatt sites, while Google announced a $15 billion expansion in Malaysia.
So what
Local permitting is now a factor in the cost and timing of AI compute, and that flows into the prices your vendors charge. Expect providers to lean harder on multiyear commitments and overseas capacity. Ask your two or three largest AI vendors where the capacity serving your workloads sits and how pricing changes if expansion stalls. If you run data-heavy infrastructure yourself, add local siting risk to your 2027 plan.
Confidence: Established fact — counts are not yet certified, but results are lopsided across trackers.

Grok Bot Now Places Phone Calls to Negotiate Bills and Cancel Services, With the User as Caller of Record (November 4, 2026)
SpaceXSI rolled out phone calling in Grok Bot for paid users: the agent can wait on hold, book appointments and negotiate bills on U.S. numbers, messaging the user mid-call when a rep asks something it cannot answer. Its terms make the user the “caller of record,” solely responsible for following phone laws, and the bot discloses that it is a virtual assistant. Early demos include a Comcast bill negotiation. Superhuman argues personal agents threaten businesses that profit from customer inertia, and Apollo’s Torsten Slok has warned of a possible “agentic bank run.”
So what
If part of your net retention depends on customers not bothering to cancel or renegotiate, an agent will eventually do it for them. Map which revenue lines rely on auto-renewal, hard cancellation or quiet price increases. Prepare a retention offer an agent can accept on the spot, and brief support teams on handling calls from bots. Retention you earn will hold up; retention that relies on inertia will not.
Hype check
Usage figures are undisclosed, and Uber’s numbers this week (see Resources) show how little agent traffic exists today.
Confidence: Watch this — the feature is live, but how often consumers will hand calls to agents is unproven.

Meta Buys Conductor and OpenAI Buys Pierre as Labs Absorb the Tools Around Coding Agents (November 4, 2026)
Meta acquired Conductor, whose app lets developers run several coding agents in parallel. Conductor stopped new sign-ups on November 4; its cloud service goes read-only November 13 and shuts down November 20, and the local app winds down in early 2027. OpenAI agreed to acquire Pierre Computer, which already hosts Codex’s code repositories and review tools, and plans to fold Pierre’s Code Storage service into Codex. Axios described the deal as a step toward GitHub’s turf; neither company disclosed terms.
So what
The startups filling gaps around coding agents are being absorbed by the labs, and customers get weeks, not quarters, of notice. Ask engineering which agent tools in your workflow come from startups under three years old. For each, confirm you can export your data and name a fallback. Add change-of-control and data-export terms to new AI tool contracts.
Confidence: Established fact — Conductor’s own shutdown notice and OpenAI’s stated plans; deal terms are undisclosed.

Tomasz Tunguz: Labs Will Push Buyers Into Multiyear Commitments to Match Their GPU Leases (November 3, 2026)
Reading Anthropic’s amended IPO filing, investor Tomasz Tunguz estimates the lab spent $5 billion on short-term compute in Q3, about half its compute bill, at roughly $12 to $13 an hour versus $2 to $4 on multiyear contracts. He puts its blended GPU cost up 82%, enough to turn a Q2 operating profit into a Q3 loss. His prediction: the 2027 winners will be labs that match the length of customer contracts to the length of their compute. TheSequence describes GPU rental derivatives being built to hedge the same price risk.
So what
Expect AI vendors, and the labs behind them, to offer lower rates for multiyear minimum commitments at your next renewals. That trade can be worth it, but only if your usage forecast holds. Before signing, model three usage scenarios, negotiate a ramp rather than a flat minimum, and keep the right to switch models. Epoch AI estimates the cost of a given capability falls about 47% a quarter, so long lock-ins can age badly.

Calling a Product a “Team of Agents” Lifted Purchase Interest but Not Willingness to Pay, in a Test of 1,014 Software Buyers (November 4, 2026)
Irrational Labs showed U.S. software buyers nearly identical pages for three small-business tools, varying only whether each was framed with no agent, one agent or several. The multi-agent version scored 6.3 points higher on purchase interest than the single-agent one, the only significant gap; it did not significantly beat wording with no agent at all. No framing changed willingness to pay, and buyers rated the multi-agent version harder to use. The authors think the lift comes from making separate features visible.
So what
“Agent” is not a pricing lever on its own, and it can make your product look like more work. Before relabeling anything, have marketing test pages that name each job the product does, with a concrete example of it in action. Keep setup promises short and visible. The study measured stated intent rather than purchases, so confirm the effect in your own funnel.
Confidence: Informed perspective — a controlled survey experiment, measuring stated intent rather than real purchases.

Agents Booked Four Uber Rides in Halloween Week, Out of 320 Million Trips and Orders: Run the Break-Even Test Before You Automate (November 4, 2026)
On Uber’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said AI agents booked four rides and about 500 Uber Eats orders in its busiest October week, against roughly 320 million trips and orders. He noted that booking in the app takes about 50 seconds and reordering a meal about 90, though he still expects agents to add demand over time. The Neuron turns this into a break-even check: divide setup time by seconds saved per run after review. A 50-second task with 30 minutes of setup and 20 seconds of review needs 60 runs to pay back.
So what
Agents earn their keep where a task is slow, frequent and cheap to check, not where an app is already fast. Ask each team proposing an automation to show this math, including review time and the cost of a wrong result. For your own product, a fast, simple flow remains a defense against agent intermediaries for now. Track agent-originated orders as their own metric, as Uber does.
Confidence: Established fact — Uber’s figures from its earnings call; the break-even method is a simple planning tool.

Two Studies for Your AI-Visibility Plan: Reddit Mentions Track AI Citations Most Closely, and Only 2.4% of SaaS Blog Posts Say Anything New (November 2026)
Ahrefs studied 10,000 U.S. brands across about 260 million non-branded prompts and found Reddit mentions had the strongest correlation with appearing in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews (0.75), ahead of web mentions (0.70) and news coverage (0.67). A separate Content Brands analysis of 37,630 posts from 219 mid-market B2B SaaS companies found total output up 37% year over year and median posts 55% longer. Only 2.4% contained original data, a stated opinion or a client story.
So what
Volume is cheap now, so it no longer sets you apart. Ask marketing to move budget from more posts toward fewer pieces with original data or customer evidence, and toward earning genuine mentions where buyers compare tools. Measure AI visibility on your top 25 buying questions before and after the shift.
